I agree with a lot of that article except maybe the female gaming part. I think they mean they are more boy-oriented genres (FPS, Sports, Racing, Hack-and-Slash 3D Platformers) and less of the ones that traditionally appealed more to women (Simulation games, Puzzle games, 2D platformers, RPGs, Visual Novels.) I agree that I can relate to any character if the story is good (Faith in Mirror's Edge being a great example.) But with games like Call of Duty flooding the marketplace, there's hardly a story even in the single player "story mode" so there's nothing to relate to. I don't think they're trying to say that they are "boy games" because they star a male character. I am glad Super Mario Maker drops tomorrow because I can't tell you the last good platformer I've played (actually, I can - Dust: An Elysian Tail on the 360 about three years ago.) And even good niche games, which generally exist in the indie world, have also fallen off in favor of half-developed let's play fodder like "Goat Simulator" or "I Am Bread".

But like you said, single player games hardly exist anymore. Yeah, I have no interest in multiplayer in pretty much any game. Mainly due to the servers for multiplayer being shutdown to support EA's Sim City games. I still play the original Red Alert, and even the more recent RA3 games on single player. There used to be a dozen decent ones, but now, there's either one (on Steam) that's decent, or it's Flight Sim, where you need 99 fingers on 110 keys just to take off.

But I do miss single player games, and fighter-jet games. I dunno about lack of female characters stopping females, my wife doesn't care.

I think developers do a tremendous job making good games and we whine about someone one way or another so I don't discount the time and effort but some of these long standing series can't just change on a dime because feminists FEEL that they aren't represented well, or the series isn't taking them into consideration. It's a different way of thinking about it I guess. If I play Halo I AM MASTER CHIEF, if I play Gears of War I AM Marcus Fenix. I want a developer to MAKE me connect to the character I am playing regardless of who that is. A story ties you to the character more so than your ability to relate because of their gender or presentation. As someone who is passionate about gaming, I find it hard to say that the focus is traditional "boy games" because personally I can appreciate a game regardless of the sex of the characters.

The lack of diversity in the games market has in a way hurt the larger AAA titles but have boosted the indie market, which is where we find all those titles that really scratch the itch for a good puzzler or hack and slash game. The game will become available for purchase on Steam Early Access, in early June, for price to $24.99.I think there are a lot of valid points in this article, but I can't say I agree with them all. For those with the game this will not change a thing however it will allow new players to purchase the game directly through Steam for the first time. Radiant Entertainment has also made the big decision of releasing Stonehearth onto Steam via the Early Access feature.
